Art Appreciation

I did my part for public art this week by "enhancing" some of the stale leftovers from Cleveland's Ingenuity Festival, such as the kitschy "suburban" installations in the city's train station, with "Yes, I am a crappy public art installation" placards.

My ancestors got the Pieta, and all I got is this lousy barbecue grill on astroturf.

What's the Ingenuity Festival? As for publc art in Cleveland, the statue of Tom Johnson on Public Square is fine, but a lot of what's been installed in recent decades isn't, in my opinion.

For example, there are those cutout figures at one of the rapid-transit stops between the airport and Tower City. The FREE stamp on the Mall or wherever -- eh.

But then there's that mural on East Ninth and Superior, of people sitting on a park bench. That went up in the 1960s? It's blocky and dated and maybe aesthetically not so great, but it's on the verge of attaining historic-preservation status, it's been there that long. If it went away, I'd probably miss it.

Love Cleveland.
