Houseguests and Spider-Men
Damned if Spider-Man didn't make me miss my bus last night for the second time this week. (Yes, Spidey 3 is filming in Cleveland this week right outside my office window. It's been fun, but it's time to move on.)
Still, while waiting for the next bus, I saw a couple of families head over to watch the filming, and that lit up my heart. If I were 7 and my dad said, "Let's go downtown and look for Spider-Man," that would have been the greatest moment of my young life.
I've lost that loving feeling. I was the world's biggest Lord of the Rings fan at 12, but the best I could muster recently was to rent the first two movie installments on DVD; I haven't bothered with the third. Not that they're not brilliant films; I apparently grew up sometime in the last 25 years.
If you can avoid it, do.
Look, the first comic book I ever owned.

StK,
Have you ever read any Chesterton? He has a wonderful chapter in Orthodoxy (it's in the public domain so is available on-line) called 'THE ETHICS OF ELFLAND' (Chapter IV) where he talks about this topic.
My years of non-belief had also made me 'grow up' in the way you are talking about. It was a very depressing thing if you ask me.
One of the most surprising things (and one of the most pleasant) about becoming Catholic was that I mysteriously got back the sense of wonder that the meaningless universe had stripped me of.
I suppose that once I was able to see again that the stories pointed to something real (yes, even Spider-Man) I was able to again enjoy them (in fact moreso) in all their wonder.
I never enjoyed LOTR more than at my last reading just a year or two ago.
It's SteveG! Awesome!
Don't tell anyone, but I haven't read Chesterton. I don't read.
OK, so I studied literature through college and grad school and was never without a book throughout my childhood. I suspect I front-loaded my life with books and now do without them to balance things out.
Nifty Chesterton namecheck here.
Wow! I don’t even receive that kind of enthusiasm from my wife and kids! ;-)

It’s in the vault, baby, in the vault.

Never studied literature, but I can relate to a childhood love of reading. In my case, I’ve never been able to put them down even to this day.

Good post. But am I messing something here? Are you referring to the mention of Chesterton in the article, or something more?
